Very rare immigrant from southern Europe, appearing in the UK once, at Minsmere RSPB reserve, Suffolk, on 14 September 2004. Not recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 50-64 mm. Distinguished from
Light Catocala promissa and
Dark Crimson Underwing C. sponsa by the shape of the postmedian line on the forewing and, on the hindwing, the median fascia, which is straighter and slender, narrowing to its dorsal extremity. The larva feeds on Evergreen Oak.
