Common in fens, water meadows, damp grassland and rural gardens throughout southern England and Wales, north to Yorkshire. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 32-40 mm. Either plain straw yellow (ab.
stramineola) or grey with yellow costal streak, both forms best distinguished from
Common Footman E. lurideola and
Buff Footman E. depressa by characteristic wing-shape. Larva feeds on various lichens growing on deciduous trees and bushes.
