A very rare immigrant from central mainland Europe, appearing at Paignton, Devon, in October 1908 (from which the vernacular name originates), Chobham, Surrey in September 1969, Charlecote, Warwickshire, in August 1973, Timsbury, Somerset, in September 2003 and Tynemouth, Northumberland, in October 2005. Not recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 36-38 mm: one of the largest Hypeninae. Larva feeds on Stinging Nettle, no evidence of breeding in the UK.
