Common in mature woodland throughout much of southern England. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight widespread and fairly common in beech woodland, and at a lower frequency in oak or birch, especially in the New Forest. Wingspan 55-70 mm. Unmistakable with a distinctive resting posture. Larva feeds on Birch, Hazel, Oak and Beech, over-wintering as a pupa.
