Common in gardens, hedgerows, scrub, fens, heathland and woodland throughout lowland Britain. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 18-21 mm. Rather nondescript, with inconspicuous or absent central spot and weak cross-lines; pale subterminal line on forewing and pale tornal spot on hindwing the most conspicuous features. Larva feeds on various deciduous tree and shrubs, including Hawthorn, Sallow and Bramble, and herbaceous plants such as Common Ragwort, Yarrow and Hogweed, over-wintering as a pupa.
