Local in fens, marshes, damp woodland and roadside verges, in England and Wales. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight mostly inland, but rare and probably overlooked, as it tends not to come to light. Wingspan 15-20 mm. Combination of two streaks on costa either side of discal spot and lack of white tornal markings make this a fairly unmistakable species. Larva feeds on flowers of Wild Angelica and Hogweed, over-wintering as a pupa.
