Hantsmoths

Common on heathland, moorland and downland, and in gardens throughout the British Isles. In Hampshire very common on the heaths of the New Forest and the north-east, with occasional records elsewhere in the county and on the Isle of Wight suggesting that it may have adapted to cultivated heathers. Wingspan 17-20 mm. One of the more easily recognisable pugs, with sharply angled cross-lines, and unique resting posture, often with hindwings concealed by forewings. Larva feeds on the flowers of various species of Heather, over-wintering as a pupa.
