Local on chalk downland and other habitats on calcareous soils, including woodland rides and waste ground, in England, Wales and southern Scotland. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight found wherever the foodplant grows, which is mainly on the chalk, with occasional wanderers elsewhere. Wingspan 20-26 mm. Fairly unmistakable. Larva feeds on seeds of Red Bartsia, over-wintering as a pupa.
