Common on moorland, especially where there are rocky areas, open woodland, sand-dunes and upland grassland, in Scotland and western England, but rare in the south-west. Not recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 29-31 mm. The main confusion species is f. thules of Garden Carpet Xanthorhoe fluctuata, which has dorsal half of central band absent. Larva feeds on Bedstraw, over-wintering in a cocoon.
