Common in broad-leaved woodland, hedgerows, moorland and gardens throughout much of Britain and Ireland. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight has increased in numbers and extended its range in in recent years; once more or less confined to the New Forest, it is now widespread, especially in the south. Wingspan 30-36 mm. The most likely confusion species is Autumn Green Carpet C. miata, but that species is larger and paler, and the forewing usually lacks reddish-brown streaks. Larva feeds on Oak, Blackthorn, Apple, Wild Cherry, Japanese Cherry, Dog-rose and Rowan.
