Common in a wide range of habitats, including coppiced woodland, fens, heathland, scrub, parks, gardens and moorland throughout the British Isles. Widespread and common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. Wingspan 26-39 mm. The main confusion species, May Highflyer H. impluviata and Ruddy Highflyer H. ruberata, are largely over before July Highflyer begins to emerge; in addition, July Highflyer has a single apical streak, the other two species have two or three short, parallel apical streaks. Larva feeds on Hazel, Creeping Willow, Bilberry and Heather.
