Common on roadside verges, rough ground, gardens, marshes and river-banks throughout the British Isles, but absent from northern Scotland. Widespread and locally common in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight, especially along the coast and in the New Forest. Wingspan 36-40 mm. The most likely confusion species is Shaded Broad-bar Scotopteryx chenopodiata, which is smaller, has less deeply notched inner edge of central cross-band, and flies earlier in the year. Larva feeds on Common Mallow, Marsh-mallow, Tree-mallow and Hollyhock, over-wintering as an egg.
