A rare Red Data Book species, in deciduous woodland in parts of the Wye Valley on the Monmouthshire and Gloucestershire border. Not recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 36-42 mm. This species varies little, except in the development of the double black spots of the hindwing, and cannot be mistaken for any other member of the family (MBGBI Vol 7 part 2). Larva feeds on Small-leaved Lime, over-wintering as a pupa.
