Nationally scarce (Nb) on heathland and other dry sandy areas throughout much of England, less numerous in the north. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight evidently far less common than might be expected and scattered through the three vice-counties in suitable habitat. Wingspan 24-27 mm. Distinguished from Matilella fusca and Apomyelois bistriatella by the presence of scale-tuft preceding first line [Goater]. Larva feeds on Birch, living between leaves spun together with silk.
