Uncommon, in fens, marshes, river-banks and damp areas; 0-1000 m throughout much of central and south-eastern Europe. In Britain, became extinct in 1851; repeated attempts to re-introduce the species have proved fruitless. Protected under the UK Wildlife and Countryside Act, and a priority species under the UK Biodiversity Action Plan. Wingspan 40-42 mm. Larva feeds on Water Dock and Curled Dock.
