An endangered Red Data Book species, on chalk downland, limestone grassland and woodland edges; 50-350 m (50-1600 m in Europe) in parts of southern England; mainland Europe and southern Scandinavia. In Hampshire there are good populations at Noar Hill and Butser Hill. On the Isle of Wight restricted to a very few sites in recent years. Wingspan 28-34 mm. Larva feeds on Cowslip and Primrose.
