Common in woodland, hedgerows, orchards and gardens; 500-2000 m throughout much of mainland Europe and Scandinavia. Generally considered to be extinct in the British Isles. Occasional individuals are encountered, including one at Stockbridge Down in Hampshire in 2007, but these are most likely to be the result of deliberate attempts to reintroduce the species. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight since 1922. Wingspan 56-68 mm. Larva feeds on Blackthorn, Hawthorn, Rowan, Peach, Plum, Apple and Pear, causing sufficient damage to be a serious pest in some areas.
