Common in rough ground, hedgerows, woodland edges, scrub and roadside verges; 0-600 m (0-1800 m in Europe) throughout much of England, rare in southern Scotland; mainland Europe and Fennoscandia. In Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight common in suitable habitat. Wingspan 28-34 mm. Larva feeds on Cock's-foot and False-brome.
