Nationally scarce (Na) and much less common than S. larseniella in rough ground and dry grassland in parts of southern and central England and central Ireland. In Hampshire recorded for the first time in May 1971 at Portsdown, subsequently known from Holmsley in the New Forest and West Park, Rockbourne, where found in numbers in July 2002 and 2003. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight since 1900. Wingspan 11-14 mm. The most likely confusion species are S. taeniolella, which see for differences, and S. larseniella, from which reliably separated only by dissection of the genitalia. Larva feeds on Common Bird's-foot Trefoil, living between leaves spun together with silk.
