Nationally scarce (Na) on downland, heathland and damp grassland. Originally thought to be restricted to Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, but after 1978 found in scattered localities in the south and east of England as far north as Norfolk, and in Derbyshire; in Wales, in the west and north from Cardiganshire to Denbighshire (MBGBI Vol 4 part 1). In Hampshire found only very occasionally at sites such as Eelmoor Marsh, Bartley Heath and Leckford in the north, and Botley Wood in the south; first recorded on the Isle of Wight at Cranmore in 2003. Wingspan 18-22 mm. Most likely to be confused with A. kaekeritziana, which see for differences, and A. pallorella, which has the forewing costal base unmarked, the subdorsal streak straighter, and the stippling of black scales is absent (MBGBI Vol 4 part 1). Larva feeds on Saw-wort, living within a spun or rolled leaf.
