Rare (proposed as a future Red Data Book species) on shingle beaches, rocky areas, old walls and dry sandy areas in parts of England and Wales. Not recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 9-10 mm. Day-flying. The differences in forewing markings between Cocksfoot Moth G. simpliciella, G. schoenicolella and G. equitella are not conspicuous and G. equitella is more easily recognised at a glance by its paler head, thorax and forewing base and by its slightly greater size. Larva feeds within stems and leaves of Biting Stonecrop, over-wintering in a cocoon.
