Scarce, occurring on woodland edges and limestone downland in parts of Dorset and on the Burren. Not recorded in Hampshire or on the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 5-6 mm. Larva mines leaves of Bramble. The mine is usually browner than that of S. aurella and its edges are more conspicuously tinged purplish crimson (MBGBI Vol 1).
