Common in woodland throughout much of northern Britain, rare in southern England and Ireland. In Hampshire known only from a handful of sites, including Emer Bog, Pamber Forest and Bramshaw Wood. Not recorded from the Isle of Wight to date. Wingspan 6-7.5 mm. Adults difficult to distinguish from other Stigmella species, and more frequently recorded in the larval stage, when mines are relatively easy to find where they are present. Larva mines leaves of Rowan, over-wintering as a pupa.
